Chances are you have seen advertisements for Chewy, an online retailer that sells pet supplies. However, Chewy is just one of many stores that offer pet products. With other options out there, is Chewy.com worth it?

To find out, I compiled a list of cat items I needed and put Chewy’s service to the test.

This review is based on three categories: pricing, shipping, and customer service. Each category’s rating is based on a scale of one to five purrs, with one purr being the worst and five purrs being the best. After each category is rated, the ratings are averaged together to determine our overall purr rating.

About Chewy

Chewy was founded under the name “Mr.Chewy” in 2011. The company launched as an online pet retailer with competitive prices.

Currently, Chewy operates as an independent subsidiary after PetSmart bought it in 2017. PetSmart purchased Chewy for $3.35 billion, which was the largest acquisition of an e-commerce business at the time.

Chewy.com offers over 1,000 brands, ranging from pet food to toys. They also have a licensed pharmacy, which you can use for prescriptions approved by your veterinarian.

Pricing

In order to see how competitive Chewy’s pricing is, I compared my the Chewy prices on my shopping list with other retailers.

I was surprised to find that Chewy sometimes beat the price of Amazon, Walmart, PetSmart, and Petco. On my list, Chewy had the best prices for Tidy Cats 24/7 Performance litter and Temptations treats.

Score!

However, if the price was not lower than competitors, it at least matched. This was the case for Sheba Perfect Portions and Sheba Meaty Tender Sticks.

Hey, a matching price is better than a higher price!

I also had my favorite flea-protection, Bravecto, on the shopping list. This stuff is amazing! However, it can be very pricey. Impressively, the Chewy Pharmacy price turned out to be cheaper than Pet Care Rx, and equal to the price of other competitors.

What’s even more impressive about Chewy’s prices is that they can be even cheaper! This is because when you sign up for your first autoship order, you save a whopping 30%! After that, you can save anywhere from 5-10% per autoship order.

Now you’re speaking my language, Chewy!

Shipping

Chewy offers free 1-3 day shipping for any order over $49. This fast shipping is on par with Amazon Prime. But, I think requiring $50 for free shipping is a little steep compared to sites like Amazon and Walmart.

However, I only knocked a half star off the purr rating because this requirement is no big deal if you buy in bulk, which almost always saves money in the end. So if you buy in bulk, you would be spending over $49 anyway.

On the other hand, not buying in bulk is still affordable on Chewy.com because orders under $49 have a flat-rate fee of just $4.95. That rate is not bad at all! With the way gas prices are now, it’s likely you would spend about the same or even more driving to a store and back.

Chewy also has a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If there are any shipping issues with an order, the customer service team will provide a replacement or refund, if necessary.

When I ordered from Chewy, my package arrived in 3 days. Not bad. What I like even more is the fact that my heavy cat litter was delivered to my front step.

I don’t think I’ll even haul that 35-pound pail again!

Customer Service

Chewy is known for their exceptional customer service. They have a 100% money back guarantee, which means if you’re unhappy with something you ordered, they will issue a full refund. This makes ordering from Chewy almost risk-free.

What I like best about Chewy’s customer service is that they offer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This means that no matter what time of day or day of the week it is, a Chewy representative is available to answer questions.

Personally, I had a small question about my Chewy account. When I called their customer service, I was impressed by how fast I was taken off hold. Also, the man who helped me was very kind and professional.

Is Chewy.com Worth It?

Now, back to the original question: Is Chewy.com worth it?

Overall, I think Chewy.com is worth it, and definitely plan on being a regular customer. I found their prices to be lower or on par with other competitors. When you factor that in the huge convenience of having the order delivered, Chewy is simply an amazing service.
